About us – SAUSKA

We started a quarter of a century ago, because we thought Hungary was capable of better wines than what we had been lucky enough to taste in our lives up to that point. Our story, like a good novel, has everything: dreams, traditions, reason, passion, friendship and love. Whether we have really succeeded in making better wine since then is not for us to decide.

One thing is for certain: our wine makes our lives complete and constantly sets new goals for us, which over two generations now have made our dreams come true together.

WHO STARTED: CHRISTIAN AND ANDREA SAUSKA

Krisztián was born in Somberek, Southwestern Hungary in 1948. He spent his childhood in Budapest and graduated from the Catholic Piarist High School. When he wasn’t practicing basketball, he was thinking about the problems of the “Middle School Mathematics Workbooks.
In the end, he didn’t become a basketball player, nor did he become a mathematician.
The seventies found him in the United States, where he studied and worked at the same time.
He became an engineer and then founded his company manufacturing special fluorescent lamps, which continues to operate successfully ever since. Over time his passion for wine matured into love as a result of a trip to Italy “a long time ago, when Angelo Gaia personally held the tastings in his cellar.”

From the 80s, he often visited home, where he met his second wife, Andrea. They shared a dream of creating a family winery in Tokaj. This became a reality in 2003, which was later joined by the Villány estate.
Even as a student at Piarista High School, mathematics was the only competitor to basketball for him.
His approach to winemaking does not lack mathematical methodology and engineering precision: he sees the path to quality in the conscious organization of work processes and constant learning. Hardworking, maximalist, He expects the same traits from all those who work with him. His pace never slows down, yet he has never completely lost touch with the ball: he is a passionate tennis player and enjoys cooking with his favorite wines.

Father of three children: Christian, Stefi and Miki and proud grandfather of six grandchildren, Christian, August, Giorgia, Lívia, Henri and Rozina.

Andrea is an economist by education and entered the family business from the world of tourism. As passionate as Christian is about numbers she is in love with words. She leads the creative team behind the family brand, from wine descriptions through label designs to media appearances. As a mother and owner, she is a true ambassador for moderate responsible drinking. Their son Miklós is a university student.

The second generation: Peter Pohl and Stefanie Sauska

Péter is the estate director of Sauska. He grew up in the wine Villány region, Bóly, and with his four siblings, he got a taste of the physical work on the vineyard as a child. After graduating from the University of Viticulture in Budapest, he joined the Villány winery, developing with our first vintages from apprentice to mature professional and turning into one of the most gifted winemakers of his generation. Precise and thorough, he is compulsively interested in the consistency of viticultural work and the purity of the winemaking processes. It is especially relaxing if you can dwell on the details. All the more so because he has to oversee the work of the Tokaj winery and the Budafok cellar for most of his time. His family heritage is a traditional Swabian cottage in Bóly, where he lives with his wife, Stefi. Their first daughter, Lívia, was born in 2014, their son Henry in 2016, and daughter Rozina in 2018.

Our Story

The most beautiful thing about wine is that it means a constant dialogue with nature, people – and one another. Our journey is a chain of conversations with amazing, wonderfully gifted humans and their impact on our works. Because wine is like that – we often only feel its impact later.

Art at the wineries

The only thing artworks have in common at the Sauska wineries is that we are deeply connected to them. We have a common past, a story, we keep many memories with them. They change with the seasons and hours, they help us to think, reflect and remember. We are grateful for their company.
