Sauska Kadarka

Villány 2020

Medium ruby. Crunchy sour cherry and fresh red currant on the nose next to the variety’s classic intense spiciness of Sichuan pepper and cinnamon with a touch of smokiness coming from the barrel ageing. Refreshingly medium bodied wine with flavors of red plum, hibiscus with a light touch of oak. This is a richer style of an otherwise light variety.

Vineyards

Bled of two the estate-grown vineyards: Zuhánya and Ördögárok. Zuhanya is located at the highest point of the colder Siklós area, overlooking the Hungarian-Croatian plateau. Excellent air flow and slightly colder weather due to altitude, has proven to be a great source for high quality fruit. Ördögárok, on the other hand, is in the warmer Villány area. It is one of the most well-known vineyards in the whole region. Thanks to its unusual “ditch” shape and the fact that the heat gets retained here, it was given the name “Devil’s ditch” (Ördögárok)

Winemaking

After thorough selection of the clusters, the grapes were de-stemmed and after a couple of hours of pre-fermentative cold soak, the fermentation started. Fermented happened both in stainless steel tanks and in oak barrels. After 30 days of skin-contact, the wine was gently pressed. Aged for 10 months in 500-liter barrels (30% new).

The Year

Early 2020 Villány soil contained a significant amount of excess water after the wet winter. At the end of March Siklós vineyards were covered by snow. Bud-break came late and progressed slowly, the two-month blooming period was chilly and dry. The cold summer lasted painfully long, until early August, which slowed down ripening. September saved the vintage with record-breaking warm temperature and unique day-night temperature fluctuation, which is extremely beneficial in building aromas and minerality, also preserves bright color. This is a vintage of lean, unique, interesting wines. Can`t wait to taste them!
