Vineyards
In addition to the Merlot of Makár-vineyard, which is the backbone of wine. Young vineyard Zuhánya is also becoming more and more important in the blend adding dynamic and lean freshness to the blend.
Character of Makár: Soil with solid limestone, marl, dolomite, loess clay in the upper layer of humus carbonate, sand spots, high calcium content. Calcium-rich loess gives higher acidity, lively, fruit-forward, and lean wines.
This highly elevated vineyard is unique because of the constant wind movement on its plateaus resulting great temperature difference between day and night. The night cooling after the hot summer days helps to preserve the acidity in the grapes – berries heat up and cool down in one day.
Winemaking
Three days cold maceration of accurately hand-sorted, clean berries. 35 days of total maceration in stainless steel tanks. Full, partial natural malolactic fermentation before the press.
Aged for 15 months in 70% used and 30% new French oak barrels.
The Year
Following the late March, winter weather spring arrived early, bringing high temperatures and early bud-break. As a result of the above-average temperatures in April and May shoot growth was rapid. May was very dry, blooming came early and pushed us into an unusually early harvest, we started with the Rose base wines on August 11th. The warm fall did not favor quality, ripening slowed down. In the second half of September, we finally saw some rain, temperatures went down, and ripening restarted. Late ripening varietals, Kékfrankos, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon developed nicely in October, we finished the harvest with Cabernet Sauvignon in mid-October. Despite the unpredictable weather and unbalanced rhythm quality turned out to be excellent.
