Sauska Sauvignon Blanc

2021

Pale yellow with green hues. Classic sauvignon blanc aromas along with tropical fruits and elderflower lead the nose followed by pronounced Tokaj minerality, grapefruit and nettle.  A lovely wine to wait for the summer for, and a refreshing one when it finally arrives!

The Year

An average winter was followed by a cool spring and early May bud-break. Shoot growth was slow due to the slow temperature rise, so we were able to keep up with the green work. Unfortunately, there was a severe cooling-period in early June, followed by a significant warming that lasted until early August. The harvest period was cool and dry. Overall, 2021 has been the driest and coldest vintage for a long time: instead of the average rainfall of 600-650 mm, we only got 400-460 mm in our vineyards. Harvest started on August 25th with Pinot Noir champagne bases and finished mid-October on Birsalmás with the grafted Furmint section of Birsalmás-vineyard for single vineyard Furmint. As part of a national program, we established our first Gyula Kovács “Fairy Garden” on Medve- vineyard where we preserve the gene pool of native Hungarian fruit trees. Once again, our vineyards have been successfully tested and getting ready for the Qualified Organic Estate specification in 2024.
