Cuvée 7 Siklós and Villány from 2011 and the Year.

2011

Potential meets experience. And they start to party

“After four intense harvests and the truly disastrous 2010 year our team slowly started to relax. We felt the rhythm, started to plant strategically, we felt completely in charge. Cooked all summer with Stefano, our Italian viticulturist friend. I have never eaten this much great, simple and honest Italian food. He brought the freshest olive oil and  Parmigiano Reggiano while we added fresh tomatoes, onion, basil fresh, and we had a blast! I am truly curious about these two wines now because after 8 years we should only feel the impact of great oak but not the oak itself. The strong 2011 vintages greatly benefited from our French oak barrels. What remained, for now, is sheer balance and beauty.”

Vineyard manager Péter Pohl

The year: 2011 was honestly therapeutic for the team after the stressful 2010. We couldn’t even make anything but basic wines because of the lack of quality.  Our young plants finally found their balance, bud- break was timely with a few days of frost and headache.

Spring showers came quite handy to help the plants stay hydrated, sunshine and lovely breezy days followed.

After an idyllic summer, last week of August was windy, resulting in dehydration. When it comes to bigger red wines, it is not necessarily a disadvantage, it can actually be helpful in creating balanced and concentrated aromas. Long and beautiful Indian summer followed by a pleasant October helped us to reach great quantity and stunning quality. Cuvée 7  Villány 2011

Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Cabernet Franc (21%) and Merlot (14%).

Vineyards: Ördögárok, Konkoly and Kopár, loess-clay soil.

Our tasting notes: Big bunch of spices, especially black pepper, clove dominate the aromas backed by pretty blueberry and cranberry tones. No sweetness here, just spices. Bold on the palate with splendid tannins softened by some buttery caramel. Lots of personality, no hesitation.

Winemaking: Total maceration in stainless steel tanks. Controlled full malolactic fermentation.

Aged in used (40%) and new (60%) French oak barrels for 18 months.

Bottled in July, 2013.

Cuvée 7  Siklós 2011

Blend of: Merlot (34%), Cabernet Sauvignon (33%) and Cabernet Franc (33%).

Vineyard: Makár, limestone and sandy loess soil.

Plantations from 2003-2004, young grapes.

Tasting notes: Fresh, lively, muscular and lean. Sour cherry, rosehip and blueberry in the nose with Merlot-dominated bursting fruiness and the intense spices of the Cabernet Franc. If we think in Bordeaux categoruies, this is definitely right bank, with silky, soft character.

Winemaking: Total maceration in stainless steel tanks. Controlled full malolactic fermentation.

Aged in used (75%) and new (25%) French oak barrels for 18 months.

Bottled in August 2013.
