Pinot Noir Birs

Tokaj 2016

Aromas of ripe black cherry lead the nose, in a mineral, proportionate, ethereal manner. On the palate a bit cold at the beginning with wild and tart cherry notes opening fast to show its young charm marked by blueberries, wild strawberries and cranberries. On point, lean, pure. The second vintage shows the same aristocratic charm that keeps us mesmerized from the beginning.

Vineyards

Birsalmás

We have  done essential preservation to the vineyard within  the last two years: vines were restructured, erosion prevention measures were implemented and centuriesold terraces were given a new lease of life. The stone walls were rebuilt in an angle to give solid protection against water downpour and soil erosion.

The unique exposure and the eroded, clay-rich ryolite loam gives the soil many minerals. Due to these factors the vineyard produces complex wines with great aging potential.

Winemaking

After hand-harvest and rigorous hand-sorting 28-35 days of total maceration to preserve the varietal's character. Controlled malolactic fermentation in stainless steel and small used French oak.

Aged 60% in used French oak for 18 months.

The Year

After a wet and mellow winter bud break started early, followed by timely blooming. The beginning of the summer was hot and dry, while July and August turned out to be the opposite. We started the harvest with Furmint and Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (base wines for the sparkling wines). September made our life difficult with frequent rainstorms. The harvested fruit was optimally ripe and had nice aromas. We ended up with wonderful, proportionate and delicate wines. And sparkling wines made the year, no question about it!
