Cuvée 7 / Villány

Villány 2016

Ruby red rim, aromas of warm oriental spices. The first sip is a fresh breeze of youth: early spring cherry, rosehip, and clove-scented plum compote. Lean body, optimal ripeness, playful texture – the character of 2016 is not about robustness, high alcohol or masculine tannins. Our hope is that we managed to touch this fine structure gently enough, helping only with a light touch of oak to preserve fruitiness and express the Mediterranean nature of its terroir.

Winemaking

Three days cold maceration of accurately hand-sorted, clean berries. 28-35 days of total maceration in stainless steel tanks. Full, partial natural malolactic fermentation before the press. Aged for 15 months in 70% used and 30% new French oak barrels.

Bottled: August 2018.

The Year

Timely bud-break, no late frosts, and a lovely, rainy-humid spring marked the start, followed by a balanced and warm early-spring. However, April surprised us with some frost causing some damage to our NW vineyards. The blooming and binding period was perfect leading to full and healthy bunches. Frequently heavy rainstorms complicated vineyard work during the summer month and led to pre-harvest. In August, well-balanced warm (28-30 C) days helped to achieve silky tannins and deep colors while the cool (16-18 C) nights contributed to building optimal acidity structure in the red wines of 2016.
